What is Kung Fu and
Ving Tsun Kung Fu
Kung Fu should always be designed for street fights and self-defense scenarios in daily life. However, today, it seems sometimes, people will be misled, will misinterpret it as a sort of gymnastics or ritual dance, and some even state and claim that only fighting in a cage and/or ring, a competition of a sport can be called a real fight, and techniques in there are useful, others are nothing but for stage combat, which is a huge misunderstanding about Kung Fu and the competition of a sport.
In short, Kung Fu is the science of fighting.
All Kung Fu systems should have the same purpose when applied in self-defense scenarios,
which is how to utilize our body as weapons; only their training system designs are different
The principle of Ving Tsun is
to put in minimum effort for a maximum effect
We always presume/ consider that we are weaker; we are facing a stronger opponent, stronger in every way. In this case, how can we protect ourselves, how to survive, even how to win, we need wisdom, we need management of our energy and our physical body.
This kind of thinking, the way of thinking itself, already offers us a philosophical mindset.
Therefore, some people claim that VingTsun was created/designed by a woman, some discredit VingTsun because of it, and some are proud of that. Anyway, as you can see, VingTsun is definitely suitable for women, for female practitioners as well. It’s very user-friendly.

Our lineage: Mentor of Bruce Lee
The king of talking hands
Bruce Lee doesn’t need my introduction, and his mentor is Wong Shun Leung, also his senior Kung Fu brother.
Bruce Lee is famous for his movies and his Jeet Kune Do, but people barely know that Wong Shun Leung’s Ving Tsun helped Bruce Lee a lot in Bruce Lee’s journey.
Some critics even claim that Bruce Lee created his own style, which is called Jeet Kune Do, by redesigning, improving, and combining with other useful things/ingredients, even giving up Ving Tsun.
Let’s have a rational talk, does it make sense? You learn and combine one piece of trash with other materials and recreate something much more useful. Why not simply mix some useful stuff from the very beginning?
Like an alchemist, like in video games, we want to create something greater. We would like to combine some S-tier stuff to get SSS, instead of some BCD tier, and create S.
Therefore, it’s totally ridiculous to think about it this way. Additionally, Bruce Lee studied philosophy at a university. He is definitely not dumb enough to do such a thing.
Why you May want to learn Ving Tsun
1. The most obvious reason: For your health, to prevent possible injury from the incorrect usage of the force of your body:
Traditional kung fu includes Ving Tsun, emphasizing the usage of our skeletal system by strengthening it. We won’t just rely on our muscles; we will also learn how to protect them by utilizing our bodies in the correct way. For example, my mother hurt her Menisci because of her bad habit when running, when crouching, and sometimes her waist muscles also get a lot of pain, because she doesn’t know how to coordinate different body parts to keep a certain posture healthily.
By training in kung fu, you will know how to utilize your muscles, tendons, bones, etc., in a balanced way.
2. The second most obvious reason: For your confidence, your fighting skill/ability
As you can see in “About”, what Traditional Kung Fu and Ving Tsun Kung Fu are about. By acquiring confidence when you are in a conflict (in your training), you will definitely find it easier to stay calm, no matter what happens in your life. You won’t easily lose control of your body.
3. The reason you may not know: Following No.2, not only your limbs, but also explore internally
Kung Fu is one of the most practical ways to do self-cultivation, to have self-esteem. Like meditation, you can explore and/or observe yourself. It’s very important to be very well aware of yourself, especially in fighting, so this is not far-fetched; this is not a joke. Understanding yourself might be much harder than understanding others, but it’s much more powerful.
4. Additionally, Kung Fu and/or Ving Tsun Kung Fu have their cultural attributes
By learning and understanding Kung Fu, you start to understand the way ancient Chinese philosophy thinks about the world,
which is originally from the I Ching. Chinese Kung Fu has its own special history, a lot of which is from Buddhism (aka the Shaolin temple).
In ancient China, Dao and Chan had already combined/mixed/put together in a good harmony, and they support each other.
Therefore, almost all kung fu systems’ design was influenced; this kind of background makes them very interesting to learn as well.
