Core Techniques of Wing Chun

Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art known for its efficiency and directness. Its techniques are designed for close-range combat, focusing on structure and sensitivity rather than brute strength. Understanding its fundamental hand techniques is essential for any practitioner.

Centerline Principle: The Foundation

The concept of the centerline is the most critical principle in Wing Chun. It is an imaginary line running vertically down the center of a practitioner’s body, connecting the most vital targets. All techniques are structured around controlling and attacking this line while defending one’s own.

The straight punch, or chain punch, is the system’s primary offensive weapon. It is delivered from the center of the chest directly to the opponent’s centerline. The fist is vertical upon impact, and the power is generated from a relaxed but solid structure, not a wild swing.

Essential Arm Movements

A core defensive block, the Tan Sau (Palm Up Block) is used to deflect incoming force. The arm is extended forward with the palm facing up, redirecting attacks away from the centerline. It is not a rigid block but a yielding, energy-dissipating technique.

The Bong Sau (Wing Arm) is a transitional, flowing technique used to deflect force from the outside. The elbow is raised, and the forearm is angled across the body to redirect a strike, creating an opportunity for a counter-attack. It is never held statically.

Used for close-range deflection and trapping, the Fook Sau (Bridge on Arm) involves a bent arm with the fingers pointing forward, resting on the opponent’s arm. It is a sensitive hand position used to feel, control, and stick to an opponent’s limbs.

Stance and Structure

The primary stance in Wing Chun is called Yee Jee Kim Yeung Ma, or the character “Yee” Adduction Stance. This stance provides a stable and balanced base. The knees are bent and slightly adducted inward, the body is upright, and the weight is evenly distributed, allowing for swift, balanced movement in any direction.
