My name is Leo Vang, of course it is not my real name, it’s my English name since I was a student, Leo is the given name I prefer to use for myself, Wang is my family name, a common, ordinary family name in China, I just change “W” to “V”, to match with Vingtsun ( “Wing Chun” also works but, Wong Shun Leung lineage typically use “Vingtsun” )

Although since the Ip Man movie franchise was released, the style’s name went viral worldwide, I find it still not easy for everyone all over the earth to find a decent school, a teacher nearby. As an authentic Chinese person myself, I also struggled to find myself a good teacher (not all teachers that I’ve met can solve my problem, can give me satisfying answers to my questions). And recent years, due to some events, the style has been put in the eye of a storm, and some people started to doubt to question whether this style is legitimate. Is this style really effective? Or just in movies? Those criticisms indicate that the name of Wing Chun/Ving Tsun is popular, like Taichi; almost everyone knows this term, but Taichi has already found its niche, most people already recognized it as healthy, fitness trainings, I don’t know Taichi well, I cannot speak for it, and everyone has right to decide to train for fitness only or for many other purposes.

Now, more people know Wing Chun/ Ving Tsun as well. It saves us a lot of time to promote, but also gives us confusion. According to my Sifu, Master Li Heng Chang, this style is always a relatively small group of people, hundreds of years ago, even kept as a secret. In the time of Great grand master Ip Man’s generation, the style was like luxurious jewelry, tuition fees were incredibly expensive, how expensive? The example from Sifu Li Hang Cheong was, imagine, today, pay with your apartment, your house, how luxurious? I don’t know, but something is as valuable as an entire house. That was crazy, and Ip Man, his family was very rich in his hometown, like Bill Gates on this earth today, so he got a chance for sure.

Therefore, all I want to say is that, today, it’s definitely impossible to pay with a house to learn a martial art; it’s insane to do so, nowadays it’s much easier to learn whatever we want, but it doesn’t seem Wing Chun/Ving tsun is correctly recognized by most people, like I said above, only its name, the name 詠春, chant for spring, literally means nothing, more than its name, people know it’s a martial art, more than this? Nothing. Even if some so-called instructors cannot explain some questions very well, as students, we certainly know less than nothing, so whatever the instructor said, we have information from very few competitors to compare with. We may have no choice but to believe. If there is, in most cases, we learn different things from different people, it is hard for us to measure, to judge,  to decide which one is telling the truth or which one is more reasonable, so it depends more on our luck.

I DO NOT talk down others; it’s my real story, and I see a lot of people out there are still the same. So today, with the internet, it’s better than ever to do something. I’m not saying I’m (or we are) the only truth; more reasonable. I’m just doing my job; you have every right to decide. I wish you good luck and happy training.
